hello everyone! today i am going to be talking about lore by Alexandra Bracken. i gave this book 4/5 stars. first off, thank you so much Netgalley and Disney Worldwide Publishing for an arc of this book! and also happy release date to this book!
trigger warnings- blood, violence, gore, attempted murder, murder, murder of children (on page and graphic,) murder of parents (on page and graphic,) terminal illness, abuse, attempted rape, and also arranged marriage.
first off, i found this book to be a bit confusing. this is probably me, but i’m not a big fantasy fan, also i’m in a reading slump. so, this probably just made my enjoyment so down. but, i feel like there was so many characters thrown at you, and different gods that you were supposed to know and also all the different rules. everything just got to be pretty confusing and i really just didn’t understand a lot of this.
but, if you are in the same boat as i was, i feel like as soon as you figure out what is happening, it is still really good read. and also that there is a lot of twists, lies, and also betrayal. and even if you are confused, it still is a pretty easy thing to still figure out what is happening and still be sucked in.
then this might just be because this was an arc, but there was a couple little spelling errors throughout the story. one of the ones that happened over and over again was “feking.” and i’m not sure if that was supposed to happen, or if that is just a simple spelling mistake. and how i found it in the context was it was supposed to be ‘fucking’ but i don’t even know.
there was also some parts where they would go back in time when Lore was a kid, i think it was like 7 years in the past. and i’m not even sure what was happening in those parts, since they honestly were so boring and i honestly just skimed it, since nothing really happened in those parts.
and i also really liked that this was set in modern day New York. since, i feel like this is a place that a lot of us know, and that maybe you’ve been or hell you live there. and i feel like since there is so much culture and different types of people that you wouldn’t see in a different city. but, i really liked that it was in NYC. but, i kind of find a trend that in mythology and even in a lot of fantastical books do take place in new york, and i wish they would kind of move on from this and pick a different city.
and i know a lot of people do like percy jackson, and i honestly feel like this book would be the perfect book. and far less problematic then those books. and i really like that they had some similarities. and i really think this is great for the original pjo fans, since they probably are a little older then some of the other ones.
i also feel like lore is a kick ass feminist novel. which, was so cool. since, i do feel like a lot of YA fantasy novels are written by men and/or have male characters or hell even just had kind of flat female characters. which, is completely different then this book. which, i feel like our female leads, Lore and Athena, do most of the book, so i really liked to see how they all worked together throughout this story.
and also i feel like this book is honestly so cool since it has way more feminist then the basic greek mythology and novels. since, this story has female characters that pretty much do anything, and of course Lore does tell the series. and don’t quote me on this, but most of the bigger greek gods that are talked about is mostly female.
the action scenes in this book were also pretty good. i’m not the biggest fantasy fan in the world, but i still really liked how it was talked about and what happened. and it never was like super suspenseful, where you are like biting your nails or something. but then when their was a fighting scene, there was time to recover before something else happened.
i also really liked the romance. like, this romance was a childhood friends to lovers, but it was also super well done. i mean, this story wasn’t like the main theme of the story. like the romance was way more big in the end of the novel, like the rest of the story was pretty much just about fighting and about Agon.
and also the friendships in this book were so good. like there was so many different friendships that went on in this book, and how they all intertwined in this book. and i mean, i feel like they all work together, and how because someone was friend with some and so, but they didn’t get along with so and so. and also that their was per-existing relationships, so Lore was besties with Miles and lives with him, but then Lore was also friends with Castor, but then they had this fall out. which, i thought was honestly pretty cool.
and also this whole story is pretty much the whole percy jackson mixed with the hunger games, and pretty much what we all read on wattpad years ago, but just way better. since there is the descendants of the greek gods and heroes we all know and have read about or at least know. but also while they were trying to survive and run around New York and steal the powers of the greek gods to steal their power for themselves.
anyway, that is all for today! i am honestly really liked this story so much, even if i was confused for a lot of this book. but, thank you so much Netgalley and Disney Publishing Worldwide for this arc.
