hello everyone! today i am going to be talking about yes no maybe so by Becky Albertalli and Aisha Saeed. i gave this book 1/5 stars. for me, this was a no, sorry for the terrible joke. and i’m not sure why i chose this, since i read all off Albertalli’s books, and hated them. and i hated Saeed Aladdin retelling, so i really had no hope for this book.
one of my biggest issues was how everything was talked about, and everything that they thought was said. it was so annoying, because honestly i don’t care what you’re doing in every minute of every day, and how you are thinking about this and and that, and how you wish you where with Maya, or how much they miss each other.
reading this book was just uncomfortable. they pointed out every cute guy/girl. which i honestly didn’t care about whatsoever. but, they also talked about girls nipples, and i guess it would be better if it’s Maya, but it was actually Jamie. which made me feel so uncomfortable.
in this book, we got the next installment in how middle aged adults can’t write teenagers. Albertalli and Saeed wrote kids who only wanted a car, which is true, but also that they also made them only love target and only eat goldfish. which is so untrue, because that is only what is told in the media. so this just really annoyed me, and half the time they acted like they where 50 year olds.
this book was roughly 450 pages, and that’s quite lot for a contemporary, and nothing happened. one event took pages and pages to happen. and everything was so drawn out, we got chapters upon chapters about them going to houses, and Maya moping that her parents are divorced.
now for the characters. this where some of the most forgettable characters in the world, and i couldn’t tell you about anyone, besides Maya and Jamie, but not even that much. and i couldn’t tell you about any of their friends, or anyone besides Maya and Jamie, but that’s it.
my biggest issue in this whole book was that they passed a law, which makes sure Muslim woman not able to drive a car and other public activities, when they where wearing head and facial covering. and that’s how they said it, and it annoyed me so much. and what i took out of this and what they were saying was like all Muslims have weapons hiding under their hijab. which isn’t something you want teenagers to think.
it was also so annoying that they where making out in target. it was just so disgusting, and i hated it so much, since it did nothing to the book. it has the same feel as teenagers that make out in the hallway. but, i think this scene was supposed to be taken out, but didn’t. since, at the end of the book, there is this scene that they ‘kissed’ in the car. and it made it seem that they weren’t supposed to kiss in target.
anyway, that’s it for today. i hated reading this book, and if this wasn’t for the book clubs that i’m in, i probably wouldn’t have finished it. and i had so many issues with this book, and most of it was how things where talked about. so yeah, i wish this book was edited a little more, and had more real life, and not so political.
