april wrap up

hello everyone! today i am going to be talking about all the books i’ve read this month. i honestly got to be in a little reading slump, since i feel like i’ve been reading a lot of terrible, and/or fantasy which i don’t normally do, so it kind of made me hate everything i was reading.

kisses and croissants by Anne-Sophie Jounanneau. i gave this book 3/5 stars. first off, thank you so much netgalley and Delacorte Press for an arc of this book! i honestly feel like this book had so much potential, but i feel like this book was to much “old school YA” for me to like this. like, i honestly feel like this book was if anna and the french kiss and emily in paris got some mash up fan fiction, it would be this book.

go the distance by Jen Calonita. i gave this book 3/5 stars. but, thank you so much netgalley and disney books for an arc of this book! honestly, this was a decent book, like, i enjoyed it, but it wasn’t the best thing or the worst thing in the world. but, i feel like this book had Meg to be way to self centered, which kind of sucked. but, i also don’t really understand the appeal of Meg becoming a god, but that might just be me.

hello cruel heart by Maureen Johnson. i gave this book 2/5 stars. thank you so much netgalley and disney books for an arc of this book! honestly, this felt like some random fan fiction, so aka this book was not good whatsoever. and i mean, it had so much potential, but it was just not good. like, i mean, there was so much stuff that wasn’t explained, and just things that didn’t make sense in the long run, especially the time period in which this book took place.

warcross by Marie Lu. i gave this book 2/5 stars. honestly, i’m not really sure what i expected in this book, especially since this book has so much hype but, i feel like most of the technology talk went right over my head, and i mean, i feel like this is just a me issue. but, it had so much potential, but i feel like all the video game talk wasn’t explained well enough.

an offer from a gentleman by Julia Quinn. i gave this book 5/5 stars. honestly, i was feeling kinda slumpy after warcross, so i decided to reread this book. and i honestly really liked it, even if Ben was kind of an idiot throughout this book, cause some of it was just common sense that he was missing and wasn’t thinking about.

an offer from a gentleman the second epilogue by Julia Quinn. i gave this book 4/5 stars. honestly, i liked this book so much the second time around, i feel like this time it was just so much better, probably cause i already read it once and that time was just to quick. but, i honestly really liked seeing Posy have kids and everything.

the ones we’re meant to find by Joan He. i gave this book 2/5 stars. thank you so much Netgalley and Text Publishing for an arc of this book! again, i honestly didn’t understand the world of this book whatsoever, like i found it to just be a mess, and i hated how they never really did to much world building. and also, that plot twist at like 60% was so wild, and not really in a good way, since i feel like we totally could have been without it.

the gilded ones by Namina Forna. i gave this book 3/5 stars. honestly, this book was pretty good, but there was just a few things that didn’t make sense to me. like, the biggest one was that the girls cannot bled from like 13 ish to 16, so they can’t touch sharp things, and i mean, it just didn’t make sense cause what if they fell or something. but, overall it was a decent book, i just also have some spoiler-y thoughts that i don’t want to get into now so yeah.

six of crows by Leigh Bardugo. i gave this book 4/5 stars. honestly, this book took me an embarrassing long time to read, like for context it took me 12 days to get threw. but, in the end it was so worth it cause i honestly really love the crows and their bond was literally everything. and they were so amazing and like such an amazing little family. and this honestly reminded me how much i love found family.

all the stars and teeth by Adalyn Grace. i gave this book 1/5 stars. honestly, this book had potential, but i just didn’t like it. i mean, it might just be me, but this whole story made no sense. and i feel like there wasn’t a real plot anywhere in this book, which got to be annoying, and the main character annoyed the hell out of me.

romancing mister bridgerton by Julia Quinn. i gave this book 3/5 stars. honestly, i think i just expected more cause everyone on twitter loves this book, but i just didn’t like it that much. like the characters were okay, but book! colin really annoyed the hell out of me, and he was like rude at points.

anyway, that is all for today! i honestly didn’t read as many as i wanted too, and i barely read any arcs, so now i have to play catch up in may, which is going to suck lol. but, hopefully next month it wouldn’t be so fantasy heavy, so i can actually understand what i read this time lmao.

april book haul

hello everyone! today i am going to be talking about all the books i’ve hauled this months. honestly, i went a little crazy this month, especially with some more physical books then i normally would. and i’ve also got a ton of arcs, so this is gonna be a bit of a longer post lol.

six of crows by Leigh Bardugo. i honestly don’t think i need to explain this book to much, since i feel like everyone has read this, or at least heard of it. but, yeah, i really only got this book cause of the tv show.

the vanishing stair by Maureen Johnson. so, of course i don’t want to spoil the first book in the series and how that ends, i’m not gonna talk to much about this book. but, this is the second book in the truly devious series.

the hand on the wall by Maureen Johnson. yet again, i’m not going to talk that much about this book, so i don’t spoil the first two books in this series, but this is the third book in the truly devious series.

kill joy by Holly Jackson. pip fitz- amobi does not want to go to her friends 1920’s fancy dress murder mystery party. and pretending their town, little kilton, is an island called Joy. but, as a game begins, Pip finds herself drawn into the made up world of murder, intrigue, and deception. but, the case of Reginald Remy isn’t the only case on her mind.

shadow and bone by Leigh Bardugo. again, i’m not really going to explain that much about this book, since i feel like this is such a basic YA book that either you have read, or at least know what the plot is about. plus, the tv show is coming out, so i feel like everyone knows what it is about because of that.

siege and storm by Leigh Bardugo. like truly devious, this is the second book in the series, so i don’t want to spoil anyone, so i’m not gonna talk about it at all. since, i feel like we can all agree that spoilers suck.

ruin and rising by Leigh Bardugo. again, this is the third book in the series, and i personally don’t even know what this book is about because i haven’t even read the second book. so, i’m obviously not going to explain it.

the duke and i review

hello everyone! today i am going to be talking about the duke and i by Julia Quinn. i gave this book 4/5 stars. honestly, i didn’t really know what to expect when i was going into this book, since i watched the tv show and i heard they are way different. but, i feel like this was still pretty good. and their might be some spoilers in here, since there is a well loved show and it’s a bit of an older book.

trigger warning- rape, sexual assault, sexual content, sexual violence, toxic relationship, child abuse, emotional abuse, misogyny, sexism, miscarriage, infertility, ableism, death of parents.

honestly, this was my first historical romance that i ever read, which was cool and whatever. so, i honestly had no clue what to expect going into this book. but, i lowkey really thought this was a good book, until that scene. but, i honestly feel like this book did a decent job with showing a marriage of convivence, even though Anthony and Benedict’s book is better, but i honestly still think this is a decent book.

to me, this book was a decent book, like it was a perfect little romance till we got to the rape scene. and this book was just pretty decent book, and it was just plan good. but, the rape scene was so unneeded. like, i know the knowledge woman have of sex today is completely different than what we get told now. but, i understand that Daphne just had no clue how it worked, to a degree. but, the rape scene still wasn’t necessary. like, there is so many ways that you could get around having a fucking rape scene, like, i mean you could have had Simon sit Daphne down, but of course, that wouldn’t cause drama, which i just think is plan stupid.

and the word rape never gets used in this book, and hell i was reading some goodreads views and everyone was like, it was just misunderstood between the two of them. like what?? like i don’t know if we read two different books but i remember Simon getting drunk, coming into the bedroom, Daphne getting on him, Simon trying to pull out, Daphne not letting him and forcing him to come inside of her, and yeah. and after it you can like see how much he freaks out after the rape scene compared to when it’s both consensual.

and i mean, i guess it also just annoyed me how they talked about it. right, like he runs out, leaves, Daphne is acting like the victim even though she did it all and Simon is the victim, and then she tells him that she’s pregnant, she’s not, and then it’s like oops my period is just late. but, then of course, Simon is like, “yeah honestly we should maybe start trying for a baby.” and also throughout the whole scene where Simon leaves her ass she’s seriously like “well yeah did i actually take advantage of him? most likely. but, i seriously feel good about it cause this could be my only chance at getting pregnant.” like, it seriously just pissed me off that 1. they never called it rape, 2. they never talk about it, and 3. they make Daf to be the villain.

another thing i didn’t really like was how stupid, but smart daphne was. like, i’ve seen a lot of people say this, but i just wanted to bring it up here too. like, before she gets married off she honestly is kind smart, and she’s got a good head on her shoulders. but, then when she gets married she kind of becomes this lap dog. like, she knows that simon is a Rake, which is like a regency era fuck boy if you didn’t know, and they bring it up over and over and over again that he is one. but, she’s like acting that she can change him once he gets married, which we all know isn’t gonna happen. like, i don’t really know how she can just expect that because she’s getting married to him, he’s just gonna change.

and, mind you, she has 4 brothers, granted really 3 cause the other one is like 12, so i guess Gregory doesn’t really Rake around yet. and i mean, she has to know that her brothers are somewhat of a Rake, especially Anthony cause like they talk about him Raking around in his book a couple times, so i don’t know how she can just expect to change him once they get married.

on a more positive side though, i really liked reading about a main character who had a stutter. i never really talk about it to much on here, cause i just don’t see the need to honestly, but i’ve had a stutter for most of my life. and in my opinion, i feel like a lot of characters in romance books are kind of the ‘perfect person’ in the eyes of Hollywood and all of that and basically you can’t have flaws. so, reading a book with one of the main characters having a stutter was honestly so amazing and i honestly really liked seeing it.

with that being said, i honestly really liked how they introduced his character and how his family arc came into play later, not talking about the sex or rape scene. and i very much liked seeing him go threw all of this. especially since it was in a historical setting. and also just seeing how he got threw it all was honestly so nice to see and honestly added more depth to this book.

and i also feel like the humor in this book was decent. some of it i don’t really think fit completely, but i still really liked it when it was entertaining. but, i also feel like most of the good humor was when they were with all of the Bridgerton’s since it was just entertaining and they all balanced each other out completely. and i also thought it was cool to see since Simon didn’t have that good of a family growing up, so him being invited into this family was honestly really cool and i really liked seeing that come into play.

and also just seeing this big family was honestly so cool. like, i feel like in a lot of books, mainly YA, but also in adult. the parents are completely MIA or their dead and most if not all of the siblings are complete dicks. so, getting a family in this book that is big af, but also so caring and supportive of each other was honestly so nice and they were all so well rounded.

anyway, that is all for today! i think this is a bit of a longer review then i have done in a hot second, since i did go on a little rant in the start about the rape scene. so, if you stuck around and read the rest, you honestly deserve a metal lol.

a Cuban girl’s guide to tea and tomorrow review

hello everyone! today i am going to be talking about a Cuban girl’s guide to tea and tomorrow by Laura Taylor Namey. i gave this book 2/5 stars. honestly, this book wasn’t even that good, since i feel like the writing was kind of a mess, but i still think it had it’s cute moments here and there, but it still wasn’t that amazing.

trigger warnings- grief, death, dementia, chronic illness, medical content, self harm, lot of food talk.

first thing first, i feel like this book had very good portrayal of grief and depression. i honestly feel like Namey really showed it super good and all that kind of happens when someone dies and all the emotions that people face. and this was honestly probably the best part of this book, since i think it just worked out so well together, and they honestly did such a great job with it.

one thing that i found to be kind of stupid, was that Lila was going to London, granted she didn’t really want to go, but she was traveling here and she’s a pretty big baker, like she works at her families bakery in Miami. but, when she came to London, she was like, i’m going to bake all day and not do to much else. which, i guess you do you, but you’re in England, which might be a once in a lifetime thing, so go explore and play tourist and not focus on baking all day. or at least maybe go to those baking classes where you try making food from that country.

with all that being said, i do wish that they aged up the characters a bit more, especially Lila. i feel like she was acting like she was mid to late 20s, when in reality she was about 18 years old. and i feel like she was just way to mature for this book, especially with the whole running the bakery thing, she just acted way older then she was.

and i know Lila went threw some shit in the start of this book. like, if you read this book, and even just the description, you know that she goes threw three bigger things at roughly the same time. so, i tried to be kind of nice with her and what i thought about her, but she was just so whiny and also just so entitled. and going back to the food, like she was so closed minded about it, and i wish she would just like not been such a bitch the whole time, and just went to appreciate the British culture, instead of making it another version of Miami.

but, i honestly feel like her British friends were honestly the best characters in this book. since, i feel like they were honestly a just a great group of people, and they honestly had personalities, and weren’t that flat, which i honestly really liked. and i feel like they had a lot of growth, which was just honestly really nice and i honestly really liked them and all of their growth was.

i also feel like Lila and Orion had a good relationship. like, i feel like they had a very stable relationship and they honestly had a good amount of growth between them. and i honestly feel like they were a solid YA romance, and they were just so sweet. and they were just a stable relationship and they were just a very sweet couple and just honestly a great couple.

and i feel like this story was pretty predictable, honestly. like, going into it, but i feel like it was kind of expected at some degree, since it is a YA romance book. so, i mean you can honestly just know what you were going to get into with this book, and i feel like it was nothing special and i feel like it was just kinda basic.

and take this with a grain of salt, cause everyone probably has a different opinions on this, but once Lila got to be with the British guy, it honestly annoyed me how she was like not getting over her ex boyfriend. like, it’s kind of selfish to get with this new guy, and just keep thinking about your ex. like, i wish they didn’t really see the need to have her have feelings for two guys, when she dumped the other one. i mean, i think the romance was cute and all, but i just don’t see the need to screw over the British guy, cause you still really like the other one.

but, i did honestly really like the rep and a lot of the drama around Lila’s family. and i honestly wished they focus a little but more on the whole drama with her family and all the bakery drama, and less on the England drama. but, i mean, i feel like towards the end we did get more talk about her family, i just wish it wasn’t has heavy in the end, and more spread out throughout this book.

i’ve also never seen anyone talk about this, but Stephanie, the ex best friend, was going to go an volunteer in Ghana i believe, but instead of saying were she was actually going, they just said “volunteering in Africa” instead of saying an actual place in here, and honestly just put the whole continent together. and also there was a part towards the end of the book where some remark is made about how Lila was concerned about her moving to Africa because she got her hair done so much, kind of implying that they don’t have electricity in Africa.

anyway, that is all for today! i honestly wish i liked this book, especially since it was in reese’s book club, and it’s also hyped up so much. but, it honestly fell a little short for me, since i feel like there was just so much drama. but, i mean, the food talk was honestly really impressive and it honestly made me kind of hungry.

i read 5 | lgbtqia+ books

hello everyone! today i am going to be doing another i read 5. and if you couldn’t tell from the title, i’m going to talk about five lgbtqia+ books. since, i feel like i really want to read more queer books, since i hardly read any, which i really want to change in the future, and this would honestly be a good place to start.

anyway, for the five books i’m going to be talking about. i’m going to talk about the rep in each book, characters, and romance, since most of the books have some sort of romance. but, i did dnf one of these books, so i’m just gonna talk about why i dnfed it, instead of everything that i already mentioned. and of course, i’m also going to list out the trigger warnings for each book.

you should see me in a crown by Leah Johnson. so, i gave this book 3/5 stars. honestly, this book was honestly so cute, but i feel like my biggest issue was that we were just being held at an arms length, which is so unpopular, cause i feel like everyone loves this book so much.

trigger warning– homophobia, panic attacks, racism, chronic illness, death of a parent, medical content, bullying, hate crime, vomit, grief, terminal illness, mental illness.

rep– so, i honestly don’t remember what the actual sexuality of this book is, since i don’t really think they mentioned it, or at least gave a label. but, i just honestly loved the rep so much, since i feel like it was just so realistic and raw. but, besides the queer rep, there was anxiety rep, Black side character with sickle cell anemia.

characters- honestly, the characters were good, but not amazing. i honestly feel like they were normal high schoolers, and that they acted like you’d honestly expect them to act. and also, there of course was some friendships, like the biggest one was Liz and Jordan, which is something i honestly really liked. and everyone in this book was just so pure, which i honestly liked so much.

romance- the romance of this book was honestly so good. like, i just really liked the romance, and how they all got along so well, and they were just so freaking pure and so sweet. like the whole concert part? it honestly was so adorable. and i honestly very much liked the romance and how it was portrayed, even the romance was more of the side plot, in my mind, since i feel like the main plot is the prom talk.

honey girls by Morgan Rogers. so, i also gave this book 3/5 stars. honestly, this book was so beautiful, so that was something i honestly really loved, and i really liked that it was so beautiful, but it just wasn’t for me, which honestly sucked. since, i feel like it was to dark and deep for me to honestly like, and honestly just couldn’t really get with it at some parts.

trigger warning- self harm, mental illness, racism, panic attack, homophobia, emotional abuse, suicidal thoughts, medical content, sexual content, toxic relationship, death of a parent.

rep– from what i remember, i believe the that the sexuality of Grace and Yuki are both lesbians, which in my mind, was just done so well. but, as Grace is also Black and then Yuki is Japanese- American. then, for some of the side characters, Ximena was bisexual, and then Agnes i believe was unlabeled. but, also Yuki whole roommate group was queer, but i’m not really sure if they actually said their sexuality.

characters– honestly, i feel like the characters in this book were so well developed. like, they were so well developed it was honestly so crazy, since they were just so cool and so well rounded. and i honestly really really liked that these characters all had their flaws, and they weren’t perfect or anything like that. which, is something that i honestly really liked in this book.

romance– honestly, i feel like the romance was kind of a mess. like, to me, i think that it was kind of a mess. like, this book did kind of dive more deeper into the mental health aspect of this book, and i feel like the romance just feel to the side, and not in a good way. but, i am kind of happy that we did get to have a more coming of age story, then shoving this romance in there, and take away from the story, but there still definitely was still romance.

stay gold by Tobly McSmith. i gave this book 5/5 stars. honestly, i went into this book not really thinking i was gonna like it, since i know some people didn’t like it, but then i read it out of spite since SE Hinton thought it was a rip off of her book, and i honestly loved this one so much in the end.

trigger warnings- transphobia, hate crime, homophobia, dead naming, suicidal thoughts, violence, bullying, emotional abuse, physical abuse, medical trauma, body shaming, misogyny, dysphoria, use of slurs, alcoholism, self harm, public outing, death of a loved one, harry potter mentioned.

rep– if you couldn’t tell from the trigger warnings, this book has trans rep. but, i also feel like there are a few side side characters, that were really only mentioned like once or twice, that were gay, lesbian, and bi. but, they were only mentioned a couple times.

characters– personally, i really liked Georgia and Pony as main characters. i honestly feel like Pony was super shy and also very sympathetic and just so sweet. where Georgia is kind of a fire cracker and just a fun person with quirks and flaws. so, they were both such cute characters and i honestly really liked them together as a couple and even as friends. and also, i just thought it was so cool to see them interact.

romance– honestly, i feel like this book was told to be this whole ‘to all the boys i’ve loved before’ story, and this super cute romance, but it honestly wasn’t it. like, it was such a harder read then something that was just super sweet and cute. but, i also felt like it took a while to actually get into the romance of this book, which i guess had it’s pros and cons, but i feel like they should have just marked the romance of this book better. and honestly, they had the best banter and they had so many cute jokes, which i honestly liked so much.

if it makes you happy by Claire Kann. i personally dnfed this book. honestly, i could tell pretty quickly that i wasn’t gonna like it, and i almost wanted to push threw this book, but i honestly couldn’t get into this book, since it was just so bad and i couldn’t get into some of the things that happened.

trigger warning- body shaming and fatphobia

why i dnfed- honestly, the point of this book that i kind of clocked out at, was how they talked about the ‘ungirlfriend.’ like for one, what the actual hell is that, and two why can’t you just call her your ex or something, and like then they would back track and be like, well their friends, but like not friends, but like friends. and i also feel like the whole plot of this book was just a mess. like, i don’t even know how to explain it, since i feel like it was just kind of all over the place.

her royal highness by Rachel Hawkins. i gave this book 3/5 stars. honestly, this book isn’t groundbreaking or anything, and hell the writing was kind of choppy, but i still really had fun reading this book at parts. and it was also fairly short, which was honestly fun, so i liked that part of it. but, it was honestly nothing special.

trigger warning– death of a parent, death, homophobia, bullying, violence, vomit.

rep- don’t quote me on the actual labels, cause i’ve seen people say both, but i believe that Flora was lesbian and Millie was bisexual. but, i’ve seen a couple different people say completely different things. but, i honestly really liked that we got to see the whole, i’m going to go to this boarding school and fall in love with a royal classmate, but queer. which, i just thought was super cool.

characters– honestly, the characters in this book had pros and cons. like, i feel like they both balanced each other out, which was super nice. and i mean, the only characters i feel like had some development was like Flora and Saks, cause the whole book Millie just talked about how much she loves Scotland over and over again. and she had like no motivation at all, which was so stupid.

romance- honestly, this romance is weird, since they were both kind of liking each other threw this book, but just like being a bitch to each other. so, that was honestly kind of annoying. but, i also feel like there was fluff in this book, but it also had too much random crap about school and friend drama, which just got to be annoying after awhile. and i mean, if you want a cute HEA, this book will be for you, but if you want a good plot and romance, i wouldn’t read this.

anyway, that is all for today! this was honestly a bit of a longer post, since i did kind of talk about more books in here, instead of just one. but, all of these books will have a full review, or the first three already have reviews, if you want to see my full thoughts. but, i hope you enjoyed this post!

the shadow between us review

hello everyone! today i am going to be talking about the shadow between us by Tricia Levenseller. i gave this book 5/5 stars. honestly, this book scared me, since i’m not a fan of fantasy whatsoever, and most the books i hate, so, actually liking this one was honestly so crazy.

trigger warning- death, murder, blood, violence, grief, gore, death of a parent, sexism.

personally, whenever i read fantasy books, i feel like most of them have a lot of female characters, but for most of the book they are fighting over something stupid, or like a boy that they all like. but, in here i completely loved how they all were so supportive of each other. and there was so many f/f friendship, i honestly loved it so much. like, it is such the bare minimum to have characters that get along, especially female characters, but i literally loved watching them all interact and they were all so supportive, which i really liked.

also, this book was just so sex positive, it was just so great. like, i literally loved seeing these characters talk about sex like it wasn’t a taboo subject. since, most books are like no we are never talking about sex and also slut shames so many people. i really liked that they were just so positive about Alessandra’s sex life, it was so good.

i also completely love Alessandra, since she was just so amazing since she never changed for a man, and just was herself throughout the book. and i really liked watching her just be herself threw out this. and i feel like she was just so badass, and also was like so amazing, and she kind of gave me some Jude vibes from the cruel prince. and she was also one of those no nonsense girls, villainous, and also i’ll break your neck if you hurt someone i love.

also, i really liked her and that we can see a badass character, who like is so self aware, and knows what she is doing and does it well. and also has this big goal and will do anything to get to the goal and not really caring what she does till she gets this goal. and also she was so ambitious, which i honestly loved so much, especially in the start of the book.

this is something that is so stupid, but i also really liked that we could get a main female character that’s hobby is just reading. like, obviously i like when they like to read, since we are obviously reading these books. but, i really really liked that she liked to make all the dresses she wore, i honestly thought it was so cool and that she had this passion that wasn’t reading or something that was super cliché.

honestly, i also really liked Kallias. like, he was so selfish and power hungry, it was honestly kind of cool. but, at the same time he was so like friendly and charming, and he so soft and nice to Alessandra, and he was just so sweet, but also so scary at the same time. and like i feel like he’s not really villain, which i’ve seen a couple people think he was. but, i mean he really fought for what was right. but, does anyone else think he’s kind of looks like ben barnes? like i know ben is 39, but i still pictured Kallias to look like ben, especially with his billy russo hair style.

and i also feel like she never changed and was so unapologetically to everything. like, this might just be me, but i feel like, especially in YA books, that the characters sometimes change for their love interest. but, she never changed for Kallias, besides you know, not wanting to kill him. so, i feel like it was just so cool and i honestly loved that part of her so so much.

but, i also feel like so many of these characters are so complex. like, we have Kallias, who is like dealing with the grief of his parents, and also like trying to rule a kingdom and trying to figure out who killed his parents. and then there is Alessandra, who is ruthless and very kind, if she likes you. and i thought that it was so cool, since all of these characters had so many layers.

i also feel like the enemies to lovers was done so freaking well. like, i feel like it wasn’t just the whole, oh yeah i hate you lol. i feel like it had so many layers, especially since Alessandra wanted to kill her, i just really liked it so much. and i really loved watching them fall in love and actually get together.

and, at the same time, this was kind of a slow burn romance. like, it definitely took awhile to get some the romance to go, which was just so cool and i honestly really liked. personally, if they got together to quickly, i feel like it wouldn’t work that well, so kind of drawing out the romance was just so cool and i honestly really liked that part of the story.

it was also just such an angsty, but it was done so well romance. like, there was so much about the characters like wanting to get together, but also like not getting together and act on their emotions. and they both understood each other so well, i honestly loved it so much, since they are each other’s biggest cheerleaders, and it was just so amazing. and also just to see what lengths they would go for each other.

in a more negitive thing though, i feel like this didn’t read like a fantasy. like, not that it was a bad world or anything, i just feel like it as more of an historical fiction, definitely not a fantasy book. like, i feel like the most fantasy part of this book was Kallias, but that was honestly it. but, it still was super good.

anyway, that is all for today! i honestly loved this book so much, and i honestly want to reread this book soon, since i just want to see what i might have missed the first time, since i was so into it the first time. but, i honestly loved this book so so much.

unbirthday review

hello everyone! today i am going to be talking about unbirthday by Liz Braswell. i gave this book 1/5 stars. first off, thank you so much netgalley and disney books for an arc of this book. and of course, this is an honest review, and it is not going to be changed by the author or the publisher, it is completely honest.

trigger warning- sexism, death, blood.

i think my biggest issue of this book was that it was just so much ‘i’m not like other girls.’ and it honestly sucks so much, since i feel like she made fun of all the girls that wanted the traditional life, so they wanted to get married, not have a job, and also have kids. like, i feel like Alice made fun of everyone in the town and it got to be so annoying. and she also made it some big ass deal that she liked to take and look at photos, it ain’t a big deal mate.

but, on a positive note, before we get way more negitive, i really liked the romance, to a degree. like, i think it was cool to see her and Kaz, i believe that was his name, but don’t quote me on that, but i honestly don’t remember if they actually ended up together, since i completely skimmed most of the end of this book. but, i feel like when they were together they were super cute and i honestly really liked them.

and i feel like most of the books in this series are completely like, let’s take the story we all know from our childhood and twist them in a different way. but, i feel like this book just took place way after the movie, which got to be a pain, since i never watched the movie, which i’ll talk about next. and i feel like they just didn’t do this justice and not enough research was put into this book.

like i said, i feel like most, if not all, of the books in this series take place during the movie, and like twist the movie completely. like, for the beauty and the beast ones, we still have the really defining moments from the movie, but then instead of some of it, we get a more aged up version with a different punch line. where, i feel like in here, it’s like years after the movie, so she is like 18 in here.

with that being said, their was no research into this book, and it was obvious. like, this book took place in like the 18th- 19th century. and this isn’t gonna make sense, but bare with me. so, if you read stalking jack the ripper or any bridgerton book, or even seen the bridgerton tv show, you know of know how protective audrey rose’s family was over her and how protective anthony was over daphne. okay, and you know the fight that goes down between anthony and simon when simon and daphne are together and how audrey rose always needed to have someone with her when she was with thomas. so, i expected that in here, since i think they were very wealthy in London, so like upper class with a title and all of that. so, even if audrey rose or daphne weren’t going to see their respective suitors, they always had someone with them. but, in here, Alice never did. like, yeah okay fine, she was taking photos, but doesn’t she still need someone to be with her, so she doesn’t get into trouble? like, wouldn’t she need a butler, female friend, mother, or her sister with her when she was going out, even if Kaz isn’t there?

also, i feel like the dialogue was way to modern. the best way to explain it, was this book had very very modern writing and dialogue. like, i feel like they wrote this book. i mean, there obviously zero research put into this book, and it like kept getting worst. and yeah, i guess you write a book with some more modern writing in an historical setting, but i feel like then you need to have more of a setting that is actually really historical, which this one obviously wasn’t. and this is completely a modern story just stuck in this random time period.

with that being said, the writing was very very descriptive., which isn’t a good thing. it was pretty much like after 2.0. basically this book went something like this. “in order to get to the shop, Alice needed to walk past the tea shop, duck under the pastry overhead curtain, walk past the tall, dark, and mysterious fountain of the man nobody ever knew. but, she also had to go past the small, tiny, row of bushes to the right of her. passing the babies and couples holding hands, kissing, and talking.” most of this book went something like that, and it just got to be on my nervous after awhile.

and also, Alice was so freaking stupid ?? like, she literally would be in the middle of the street, like in the middle of a busy ass road. and then she would be like talking to the fern or like the rabbit from the movie, and she looked insane. obviously this is a completely different time period then we are in now, so like talking to the fern or some invisible rabbit, isn’t a good thing and like, probably get you thrown into the asylum. like, i might be a little dramatic there, but it kind of made me go like huh???? when i was reading this.

and i think this book is like 500+. which, i guess you do you, but honestly it is such unneeded. like, i feel like this whole book was just so much drama about the characters being idiots and not doing really anything fun. and also, i don’t even know if i’d consider this to be a retelling since it happened way after the movie.

anyway, that is all for today! honestly, this book was not for me, and i honestly think the biggest part was that the writing honestly sucked so much, which i think is mostly just the writing. but, thank you so much for an arc!

the poppy war review

hello everyone! today i am going to be talking about the poppy war by R.F. Kuang. i gave this book 2/5 stars. honestly, take everything what i say with a grain of salt in this review, since i’m not a fantasy and war fan at all, so most of this book was just so freaking boring. since, it’s not what i normally read, and most of this actually went over my head.

trigger warning- violence, genocide, rape, death, drug use, drug abuse, torture, sexual violence, gore, blood, child death, addiction, physical abuse, sexual assault, grief, body horror, self harm, murder, child abuse, racism, emotional abuse, xenophobia, medical trauma, bullying, animal death, confinement, animal cruelty, infertility, slavery, curing, suicidal thought, medical content, misogyny, sexism, mental illness, kidnapping, hate crime, vomit, suicide, forced institutionalization, pedophilia, sexual content, trafficking, domestic abuse, excrement, racial slurs, panic attack/ disorder, alcoholism, abortion, miscarriage, toxic relationship, suicide attempt, adult/ minor relationship, gun violence, mass school shooting, religious bigotry, cannibalism, body shaming, death of a parent.

  • i would check goodreads and/or storygraph for more trigger warnings cause i probably did miss a couple.

this might just be me, since i don’t read to many fantasy and war books, this just didn’t make sense to me. like, there was just so much happening at once, and we were supposed to understand the 100 different things taking place at once, i really just didn’t understand most of this book. and i just didn’t understand like 89% of this book, which was kind of annoying. and this is such just a me issue, since i just didn’t understand the world.

but, i honestly really liked the first part of this book. like, the first part of this book was just so incredible, like i loved to see how smart and driven Rin was. like, it just was so good and i loved to see how dedicate she was to get into this school. i completely loved that element and how amazing it was.

then, part two, when she was at the school, was honestly really good. i really liked to see the whole part about training and competing with the different kids there, and just to see that they were all so driven about this school and their talent. and, it was just so good, and i completely loved this part of the book and how brave and bad ass she became to be in this school.

but, then i feel like this all kind of got bad. like, i feel like the world building in the start, which i’ll talk about later, was so good. but, i feel like Rin kind of got soft ?? like, i don’t know if that makes sense, cause she definitely wasn’t soft like a YA contemporary character, but more of like soft with what she was doing. and i feel like she got to be a bit annoying since she started to lean more on using the gods over everything else.

like i said, the world building was so good. like, i felt it was so rich and amazing and how they bring everything up and how they explained all of this in a good speed. and like this book wasn’t so info dumpy, and we didn’t get it shoved down at our throat at once. and i honestly feel like this was such a great world building, especially about how they explained all of this.

but, also towards the end of the book, we got into this romance. i honestly just didn’t fuck with the romance, and i think it took so much away from the story, and that is coming away from someone that is a die hard romance fan. and i mean, i’m not gonna read the rest of the series, cause i barely got threw book one, but i just hope this is some set up for her to take over the army or something.

this might just be me and that i forget something, but like if Sinegard was in this capital of the city, and it is supposed to be this big place that got protected 24/7, and you know, it’s a military school. but, it was so under protected??? like, i feel like if this school is talked about to be so prestigious, like the Harvard of this world, but their city got overtaken in like two minutes. like, i just don’t know if i missed something, but that just didn’t make sense to me.

this might be kind of unpopular, but i literally loved Kitay in this book. like, i don’t know if this right the word, but he was that like ‘comic relief’ character. and like he wasn’t a funny character, but i feel like he was one of those characters that is actually good, even though they aren’t the main character.

but, i honestly feel like the pacing was a mess. like, part one had such great pacing, and like when she was at school, the pacing was amazing. but, then it like jumped, two years, and for those two years, it was like five sentences. like i would rather to have them be like ‘two years later’ and then explain it in detail, not five sentences. then, they got to the real war part, and i feel like the pacing here was weird, cause i feel like some parts were drawn out so much, but then other parts were so fast, and it didn’t make sense to me.

and i don’t know if this is just being a buzz kill or whatever, but like this whole army was literally brutally killing people and everyone that i read reviews for was like omg it was so good, and like i didn’t find it cool ??? like, i thought it was kinda gross and i just didn’t really want to see a bunch of innocent people being killed. like, this is just me, but i feel like this was just the extreme and i didn’t find it cool or anything.

anyway, that is all for today! i honestly wished i loved this book, since everyone loves this book so much. so, i just wished that i liked it. but, i’m not a fantasy or war book fan, so i don’t really know what i expected honestly.

i read 5 | romance books

hello everyone! today i am going to be talking about five romance books i’ve read recently! honestly, some of these book weren’t good at all and i ended up dnfing them. but, i still wanted to include them, since i did pick it up for this blog post. also, the books that i actually read, they will get a full blown review soon.

but, for how i’m gonna talk about these books, i’m going to talk about the romance, characters, and the writing, since i feel like that was the main thing in these books, since it is a romance book. but, i’ll also include the trigger warnings, so you know what you’re getting yourself into, if you pick up one of these books.

shipped by Angie Hockman. i gave this book 4/5 stars. honestly, this book was so cute, and i completely loved the characters and how their interacted. and just completely like this book so much. and it was honestly just such a cute book, and i highly recommend it.

trigger warning– misogyny, sexism, death of a parent, vomit, grief, domestic abuse, emotional abuse, panic attack/disorder, ocean / deep water, water anxiety, sharks.

romance– honestly, this was such a cute romance. like, it was very enemies to lovers, in a more modern setting. so, i really liked it. but, i do feel like they got together to close to the end, so i couldn’t really get into the couple that much towards the end. and i also feel like it was wrapped up to quickly, which was kind of annoying since they didn’t really get a good ending.

characters– personally, i really liked the characters. i honestly really liked Graeme and Henely, i feel like they were developed really well and that they were honestly very well rounded, in my opinions. but, i feel like some of the side characters weren’t developed all that well. especially the people that they worked with, since we didn’t see them a lot, but they were still really nice when we did see them.

writing– the writing was honestly super good. it really honestly really drew me in, and it really got into this writing. like, it was just so good and really really worked in this book. and i feel like the author really knew the characters, so it made the writing so much better. and also it was just so fun, that i really got into it.

love your life by Sophie Kinsella. this is one of the books i did dnf, since i just wasn’t that into the series, and i just couldn’t get into this book. and i’m kind of upset since i feel like this author is such a stable in adult romance, so that honestly sucks. but, thanks for the arc.

trigger warning– body shaming and chronic illness.

why i dnfed– to me, the writing of this book was just so bad. like, i mean, i feel like this whole book was the main character just complaining about leaving her dog and friends in london and how she has to go to italy, i believe, to write about her book. and also, once she got to italy was honestly lowkey kinda culty, like they couldn’t use their real names or any personal information, had to wear random clothes that they gave them at the retreat. and honestly when i got to reading, i could honestly just tell this wasn’t the book for me.

the ex talk by rachel lynn solomon. i gave this book 3/5 stars. this book was honestly pretty good, and i really did like the workplace aspect of this book. and if you are looking for some books with Jewish characters written by a Jewish author, i highly recommend this.

trigger warning- sexual content, death of a parent, grief, sexism, misogyny, cancer, chronic illness, death, panic attack.

romance- personally, i think the relationship worked so well together. like, i feel like the romance was just so good, and honestly so steamy, which was so good. and i feel like they were such a compatible couple, which was so exciting to see honestly. and i mean, it all worked so well, and i feel like this book was more romance heavy then shipped, so that honestly worked so well. but, i could honestly see how much they loved each other, and how much they really worked together.

character- this might just be me, but i feel like a lot of the romance books that i read, and the main stream books, the male character is always older, but in here it was the reverse. since, the Shay was older and i actually really liked it. and i feel like most of the characters were really well rounded, so that was cool. but, i feel like Shay and Dominic really worked well together and they were very strong characters.

writing- honestly, this was the bad part of the book. i feel like there was so much drama in the book, like there was so much f/f hate at some parts, and it got to be so annoying. but, i do feel like the writing with the whole romance was so good, and they really did the sex scenes so well.

take a hint, dani brown by Talia Hibbert. i gave this book 4/5 stars. i honestly found this book so be so funny and light hearted, but also kind of emotional at the same time, which i really liked. but, this was honestly such a solid read.

trigger warning– sexual content, panic attack/disorder, mental illness, grief, death of a parent, death, car accident, emotional abuse, toxic relationship, islamophobia, racism.

romance- honestly, the romance of this book was super cute. like, i really liked how this romance set up, and how they got to their fake dating, with the whole twitter sandal. and i thought it was just super cool. it was also so cool and getting to see the whole fake dating, but then them getting into this relationship was just so cute, and i honestly really liked that element of it.

characters– personally, i honestly really liked Zaf and how he was so into romance books, i just thought it was so cute and i really liked reading about him talking about them. but i also didn’t like how he was so rough with his family and friends and also like threated them. but, i feel like Dani was a really sweet character and she was very loud, but still really sweet.

writing– the writing was honestly pretty good. i mean, it had the whole basic formula from book 1, which was fine, if you’re into that. but, i feel like this still had very good writing and wasn’t dry or anything. and it was honestly so addicted to this book, which i think is mainly romance and the writing.

real men knit by Kwana Jackson. this is the other book that i did dnf. but, i just didn’t like this book, which i’ll explain more, since i feel like this book was just not what it was.

why i dnfed– the biggest thing, it just didn’t make sense to me. like, in the start of the book, they just talked about things like in present tense and what was happening, and then they would jump back into the past, and i just couldn’t get into it. and also just the writing was just, not good. like, it just felt so dry to me.

anyway, that is all for today! i honestly hope you enjoyed this post, since i had so much fun reading these books, and also writing this post was really fun. and hopefully you liked this, since i have so many more in the process and some ideas.

legendborn review

hello everyone! today i am going to be talking about legendborn by Tracy Deonn. i gave this book 4/5 stars. honestly, this book was honestly so good, but at some points i honestly was a bit confused, cause i think i simply stopped listening when it was playing, so that probably didn’t help since it was a fantasy.

trigger warning- racism, grief, death of a parent, death, violence, slavery, blood, racial slurs, sexism, gore, bullying, misogyny, murder, medical content, car accident, mental illness, rape, kidnap, panic attack, physical abuse, emotional abuse, harry potter mentioned.

personally, i really liked that this book had high talks about grief and it was the main theme of this book. i feel like a lot of fantasy books don’t talk that much about grief and talk about your parents dying, especially is they are human, and not like murdered when the main character is like, 5. and i mean, the grief of her mothers death really shaped her, so i honestly really liked it, since i feel like it was done so well.

but, i also have never really read anything like King Arthur, and i honestly probably will, assuming it’s a book. but, i feel like you don’t even need to know that story to well to actually understand this book, like some other retellings. so, i thought that was so cool. but, i also really liked that this had some city of bones vibes, which i honestly really liked, cause i wasn’t the biggest fan of that book, so that was so cool.

also, i really liked Bree as a main character, since she was so smart, but she never like pushed it in your face like some main characters that are smart do. so, i personally really liked that and also to see what she was doing and how because she was so smart, she could honestly get out of situations, and to see how she actually did that. i just really liked it honestly, since i feel like it is so rare, especially in fantasy, to have such a smart character.

on the other hand, these characters made no sense to me. like, i knew who Bree was, her roommate, and then the girl she knew going into this school that went to her old school. and even with the love interest, i like to think i’m pretty good with knowing who each character is, but in here, i had no clue who anyone was. i’m not sure if it was because they all were kind of similar and had the same voice, but that honestly confused the hell out of me.

but, i also feel like the magic system was kind of a mess. since, i feel like it wasn’t explained that well, so it was just so confusing and poorly explained. like, i feel like we never really got told about how you get these powers, or how you can get into this club. i honestly just didn’t understand it at all, and that could just be my fault, but it still didn’t make sense.

with that being said, i feel like this book being very confusing and not really getting the world and magic explained that well, i feel like it was almost attentional. since, i feel like a lot of fantasy books, the main character has been in this world and/or had this power for their whole life, so they need to break it down for us. but, in here Bree is coming into this world for the first time and is coming into this school/magical world for the first time. so, i almost feel like it made sense that it wasn’t broken down for us, since Bree is new to this too.

but, i also really liked the whole banter with her friends, especially with Alice. i feel like the banter between the characters are some things that honestly make a book. so, getting this banter between them was just so cute and funny. like, they had so many little jokes, it was just so cool. and also the way she talks with the boys and the people in the club, it was just so amazing. and she also had some of the best comebacks and i was like, damn girl you killed it.

with that being said, i do wish that we got to see more of Alice. i might have just read this book wrong, but i feel like it was going to have more friendship, just by the description and also the just by the first few chapters, it was gonna be this book with so much friendship. but, i just wanted there to be more, and that we got to see more of Alice and Bree and how they get to this school and relying on each other. but, as the book went on, we just got less and less of Alice, which annoyed me.

and i honestly feel like there was so many tropes in this book. which, to teach it’s own, was fine i guess, if you into that. like, first off, there was insta love, which i’m honestly indifferent with. and, this book takes place in like three ish weeks, so i think it would be insta love, but i don’t really know cause at the end there were the whole, i’d die for you kinda thing. but, then there was also the whole love triangle, which i honestly didn’t feel was that important and i thought it was kind of stupid, but you do you i guess. then, there was the whole chosen one trope, which i literally hate with a passion honestly. but, i feel like it was done semi good in here, but i still am not the biggest fan of it.

anyway, that is all for today! i honestly really liked this book, but i do feel like this book did have some issues, and also the hype did get to me a little bit, so that honestly took away some of my enjoyment. but, it was still a decent book and i’m honestly so excited for book two.
