march wrap up

hello everyone! today i am going to be talking about all the books i’ve read in march. honestly, this was such a good reading month and i found three new favorite books this month, so i’m honestly so excited to talk about them. and three of them you will probably see in my favorite books of the year. and one i’ve been screaming about on twitter, which is bookish_r. and a lot of the earlier books of this list are mid reading slump, so bare with me.

unbirthday by Liz Braswell. i gave this book 1/5 stars. thank you so much netgalley and disney books for an arc. but, this book wasn’t for me. i’m not the biggest Alice in wonderland fan and i’ve never read the original book and the disney movies, but i still expected them to explain the world more. but, then it was just this shit show of a world and so many things happening that just didn’t work to well.

a whole new world by Liz Braswell. i gave this book 3/5 stars. here’s the thing, i’ve read this book before and i’m a big Aladdin fan, especially the live action. but, this book was honestly kind of decent, like it wasn’t bad, but wasn’t good. like i feel like most of this book was just a mess at some points, and kind of messed somethings up with some of the romance. but, i mean it was still decent, if i didn’t love it.

a Cuban girl’s guide to tea and tomorrow by Laura Taylor Namey. i gave this book 2/5 stars. i’m gonna be completely honest, i have no clue with what happened in this book. but, this book was so bad and just cringey to me. like i feel like so much was happening and this whole book our MC just complained about everything what was happening because she hated her life. but, i do feel like the talk about depression and grief was so well done, hence the two stars.

the shadow between us by Tricia Levenseller. i gave this book 5/5 stars. this is one of the books that you will probably see again in the future. but, i honestly loved this book so fucking much, with the romance and the whole fantasy element. and also i loved that it was so sex positive and the female friendships really made this book. which, is something i really loved and i loved this book so much. so, moral of the story, go read this.

down world by Rebecca Phelps. i gave this book 4/5 stars. thank you so much netgalley and wattpad books for the arc of this book. overall, i found this book to ben pretty good and to honestly to be kind of interesting not gonna lie. and yeah it had some issues, but it worked out in the end, in my mind. and the many different universes were honestly pretty good and very interesting to read about. and i also really liked the talk about family.

the duke and i by Julia Quinn. i gave this book 4/5 stars. honestly, i didn’t know what to expect with this book since i know they took some creative liberties with the TV show, but i was honestly surprised about how similar Daphne and Simon’s romance was to the tv show and the book. but, i will say, i did enjoy seeing the rape scene being in here, since i feel like men being raped, especially by their partner, is never really in the media, so that was kind of cool.

the duke and i: ending 2 by Julia Quinn. i gave this book 3/5 stars. honestly, this was a cute book, and i enjoyed seeing Daphne and Simon after they had all their kids and what they were doing now. but, i mean it was short, hence why i felt like i couldn’t give it more then 3 stars. this book isn’t the best book i’ve ever read, and by far not the first, but it was still a cute and short read to say the least.

stalking jack the ripper by Kerri Maniscalo. i gave this book 5/5 stars. honestly, i believe that this is my third reread, so i won’t talk for to long about it. but, i honestly forgot about how much i love audrey rose and thomas and their romance. and i’m honestly surprised about how much of this book i’ve forgotten since the last time i read it, so that was really cool to see everything again.

she’s too pretty to burn by Wendy Heard. i gave this book 5/5 stars. thank you so much netgalley and the publisher for an arc! but, this book completely blew me away since it was just so good. i completely loved the characters and the romance. and also how good and how well the romance was written, like a real teenage relationship, which was just so good and cool. and i highly recommend this book, since it was so dark, yet so freaking good.

saints and misfits by SK Ali. i gave this book 2/5 stars. thank you so much netgalley and the publisher for an arc! this is a weird book for me to talk about, since i feel like it was a very hard hitting book, which i didn’t really expect. but, i do wish that we got a more emotion from our MC, cause i feel like she was really closed off, which kind of got on my nerves. and since she went threw some hard times in this book, i kind of just expected more emotions.

the viscount who loves me by Julia Quinn. i gave this book 4/5 stars. this book was honestly so cute, and i really loved it and how all the romance went about. but, i personally really liked it, but i feel like them getting together with the romance was kind of similar to Daphne and Simon, since it was because of a scandal. but i really liked them once they finally got together and they were super cute and shit. and i really cannot wait to watch this once it comes out.

the viscount who loves me: ending 2 by Julia Quinn. i gave this book 4/5 stars. honestly, this book was lowkey very cute and very fun to read about and to read about the characters and when they got to be married and with their kids and all. and overall i just found this to be super cute and enjoyable.

an offer from a gentleman by Julia Quinn. i gave this book 5/5 stars. i honestly loved this book so so much. i completely feel in love with Benedict and his love story with Sophie, since it was so fucking amazing and like so so beautiful. like, they way their interacted with each other and how they got together with everything was just so amazing. and i feel in love with this story and i lowkey want to reread this book soon since i love it so much.

an offer from a gentleman ending 2 by Julia Quinn. i gave this book 3/5 stars. honestly, this was cute and all, but i wish it was more about Benedict and Sophie and not that much about Posy and her getting married and shit. but, i do think it was kinda cute about how protective Benedict was over Posy at one part.

the ex talk by Rachel Lynn Soloman. i gave this book 3/5 stars. overall, this was a cute book and i liked the romance. but, i wish we got to see them date more and like be a couple. i also really liked that the female lead was older then the male, since i feel like we never really see that in romance books. i also really liked the podcast element.

happily ever after by Elisa Bryant. i gave this book 3/5 stars. overall, this was a decent book and it had a lot of potential. but, they talked about harry potter so much it got to be annoying, especially since this came out after all her transphobia went out. i just wish they cut that out in the final version. also i hated the gay best friend annoyed the hell out of me.

the hand on the wall by Maureen Johnson. i gave this book 4/5 stars. i honestly really liked this book, but i kind of wish i read this via e book and not e book. but, it was still pretty good and i still really liked it and it’s pace, since it was all in like one week, but mostly one weekend. and i actually didn’t hate the romance in this book, i was more hoping they got together which was shocking.

her royal highness by Rachel Hawkins. i gave this book 3/5 stars. this was honestly a decent book, but i feel like there was really nothing happening in some of this book. like, this book was roughly 300 pages, and i almost just expected more stuff to happen in this book. cause, i only really remember a couple things happening in here which just got to be annoying.

shadow and bone by Leigh Bardugo. i gave this book 3/5 stars. honestly, i’m not a fantasy fan by any means, so take what i say with a grain of salt. but, i feel like a lot of this book was just so confusing and would probably work better in tv format then book, so i’m excited for that. and like i’ll probably still read the rest of the series cause why not.

take a hint, Dani Brown by Talia Hibbert. i gave this book 4/5 stars. this was such a sweet and cute book, but i feel like it took me forever to read this book and to actually finish this. but, it was a super cute book and i really liked Dani and Zaf’s relationship and how they turned faking dating to friends to lovers. over all, they were just super cute and i loved them together honestly.

anyway, that is all for today! i honestly had a pretty good reading month, since i got to read a lot of book, and i liked most of them, so that is always fun. plus, i found some new favorites, which i honestly really love, so overall, it was a decent book, and i can’t wait to talk about them in the next couple months.

anyway, that is all for today! i honestly hauled so many cool books this month and i honestly can’t wait to read these books in the next couple months. but, i know some of these books the description was kinda bad, since i feel like the goodreads descriptions were kind of a mess for some of them, so yeah.

down world review

hello everyone! today i am going to be talking about down world by Rebecca Phelps. i gave this book 4/5 stars. first off, thank you so much netgalley and wattpad books for an arc of this book! and happy almost pub date, it’s march 30th, if you care. and also this of course, is an honest review, and all the opinion are mine.

trigger warning- bullying, child death, death.

personally, i think if you really like back to the future, or even like those movies a little bit, this book would probably be for you. honestly, its a little different since they obviously go back to the past and see the parents, or hell even go to the future and see their future kids, and this is a parallel universe, so its a little different. but, i feel like if you like that, you might like this, to a degree.

one thing that was kind of annoying was how they described everything. like, literally everything, they would go into all this descriptions about everything that was around them and also how things looked. i will give them a plus, but i really liked that we got to see our main characters emotions and what they were actually feeling with everything that was happening.

but, this book also read like a debut. which, is something that i honestly really expected, since at this point, i always do. so, i feel like with this being a debut, and this is most likely Phelps’ first real time writing, so i can’t really hold that against them. but, if it got a bit more editing, it might have been helped, but it could honestly get over it and also just expected.

personally, i really liked the characters. i feel like they were all so different, and have so many different plots and even emotions, which is something i liked. and i honestly really liked to see how they all worked together and how they all had different feeling about the doors and how everything really worked, they all thought different things and had different reactions which i really liked. and overall, i thought it was cool to see that, and honestly i didn’t really expect it.

but, i did find the doors to be kind of confusing. like, they would talk about them, but they never really deeply explained it that well. which, got to be kind of annoying if i’m being honest. like, yeah they would say, here’s the three doors, yesterday, today, and tomorrow. which, yeah i get that, but i wish they kind of explained it more and went more in depth about it. and i don’t know, i kind of expected something more.

and i also feel like there was somethings that were not explained well enough. like, they told about this other door, but they just didn’t explain it well. like, i feel like it was just confusing cause they would kind of bring this other door up, but never really explain how it was created, or at least from what i remember, which could be wrong.

i honestly found that all the different people got to be kind of confusing. like, they would bring up these adults, who went to this school when they were teenagers, which was fine. but, then they would like fight with these teenagers and they are like 50??? like your 50, get over yourself and tell the teenagers what you know. like, it got to be kind of annoying.

but, i do feel like these characters were written like teenagers. like, i feel throughout this book they were written like you would write a teenager. and overall, their mindset and motives were very much something a teenager would think and how they would react. so, that was really cool and i overall really liked it so much. and that was probably got to be one of the best parts. even if they are a bit unlikeable, which i would just push threw.

and i honestly kind of liked Marina. like, at parts she was a bit annoying, which was honestly fine and i got over it. since, i feel like she went threw so much with her brother dying and how she had to get over that. and i feel like she was such an honest character, which was so cool. and that she just said it how it is.

but, i might consider this to be low horror. like, i feel like there are parts that are a bit spooky and kinda weird, but it might be a cross between sci fi and horror, like, if they meet and collided into one book. with that being said, it really isn’t that scary, more just odd and kind of paranormal.

with all this being said, i do feel like there was parts of this book that went into the relationships, romantically and just friendship, way more then it probably should have. i personally feel like they went into these relationships and the crushes, when they probably could have not happened, or at least go into so much detail and focus on the doors.

anyway, that is all for today! this is honestly a shorter post, cause i feel like i don’t have enough feelings for this book, and i just don’t want to say the same things again and again. but, still thank you so much Netgalley and Wattpad books for an arc of this book. and happy almost pub date!

she’s too pretty to burn review

hello everyone! today i am going to talk about she’s too pretty to burn by Wendy Heard. i gave this book 5/5 stars. personally, i loved this book so freaking much, and i lowkey want to buy my own copy of this book. but, thank you so much Henry Holt and Co. and Netgalley for an arc of this book! this is also gonna be an honest review, and isn’t gonna be changed cause i got an arc. and also, happy almost publication date, this book drops March 30th.

trigger warning- animal death, death, kidnapping, child death, panic attacks, violence, addiction, emotional abuse, toxic relationship, blood, car accident, murder, fire, (almost) sexual assault.

first off, this book was so fucking amazing. i honestly went into this book thinking i was going to actually hate it, but instead this literally blew me out of the water. like, i’ve never really seen Dorian Grey, so i was kind of scared since it is a retelling, just queer. and also the last couple retellings that i read, i really didn’t like. so, i was honestly so happy when i loved this book.

also, this book isn’t for the faint of heart. like, before i went into it, i really didn’t think it would be to bad, but god it will be a very triggering book to some people. i mean, this whole book is surrounded with death, animals and people, especially kids. and i just want to say this, since it is on the edge of your seat thriller, but super triggering. (side note, i always really like when people say what animal dies in a review that i read, but, in here it is just a chicken and pig. and they are also off page death too, so we don’t see them being murdered.)

honestly, the last 50 pages of this book i’m literally still screaming from. like, it was just so fucking good and it had so much stuff happening and it was just so fucking interesting and like edge of your seat what the actual fuck. like, i don’t know about you, but do you ever like read a book, and for the last little bit of this book, you are literally just sitting there with your mouth open wide and catching flies. like, that is literally how i was sitting for the end of this book. and i’m not even being dramatic when i say that, cause i finished this at like 1 am watching chicago pd on USA, and i was like what the actual fuck.

but, i also feel like this book definitely did deal with some harder subjects, like death, and also Mick and her mom drama. like, i feel like it was done so fucking amazing and i really honest and they didn’t make it have an happy ending for a YA book. like, i feel like it was super cool and i really like that we could see why Mick was so bad, and why everything was kind of a mess, and how they both feel.

with that being said, i also really liked Veronica and her mom’s relationship. like, it was so cool to see a positive mother x daughter relationship and also a negative mother x daughter relationship. like, i think it was so cool how supportive Veronica’s mom was about everything, and she really just want was best for her and her friends/girlfriend. and it was honestly so cool to read a book with such an open mind and sex positive mom, but of course she has her boundaries with different things being talked about and what is happening in her house. and also i really liked that she was kind of mad when her daughter did something stupid, which i really liked. since i feel like a lot of YA, especially queer books, that the parents are piece of shit, so this i really liked.

but, i did have a love hate relationship for a lot of this book. like, i think they did good and they had cute moments, but at some parts they also were like super toxic, which was not the best thing in the world. but, i do feel like this relationship was very realistic. like, i feel like a lot of YA romance books are like super positive and they meet and they are like in love and so perfect, so i really liked that we could get to see this kind of messy romance, that wasn’t the most positive thing but also not the most toxic thing in the world. and i honestly feel like we need to have more real relationships in YA books.

i also feel like we had a couple unreliable main characters / narrators, which i’ve never really read that much in the past. so, i feel like this book was honestly so cool to read about it and to read with a couple of these characters not being the best people in the world and also not to be the poster child for YA thrillers. and also it was just so cool and i really loved it so much.

personally, i really liked that we got to see some of the darker sides of each characters mind. like, we got to see Mick and how she loves swimming, but also how her personal life is kind of a mess. and then with Nico and how he was this artist, but he did some very questionable things. finally, with Veronica, who is a photograph but also does some random things, without going into spoilers, so i honestly really liked that and to see the darker side, but also the cute romance and their interests.

there is also so many twists in this book that it was just so fucking cool. like i loved to see how these things just changed and how everything was just changing in a moments notice and how most of this book, was just different twists and turns and how different things were playing out in so many different versions. and like it honestly kind of made the end of this book to be what the fuck again. so, i honestly loved it so much.

anyway, that is all for today! i honestly could probably talk for so much longer on this book, but i don’t want to keep word vomiting on this post right now, so i’m gonna end it here. but, thank you so much netgalley and the publisher for an arc, cause i love it so much and i can’t wait to read more by this author.

the Black kids review

hello everyone! today i am going to be talking about the Black kids by Christina Hammonds Reed. i gave this book 2/5 stars. honestly, this book was just not what i expected it to be, so it kind of messed with my enjoyment of this book, and also with the reading slump, it didn’t do me any favors.

trigger warning- racism, racial slurs, police brutality, hate crime, suicide, grief, addiction, bully, death, drug use, gun violence, child abuse, death of a loved one.

the biggest issue with me, was how this book had so much petty high school drama. like, i feel like most of this book just dealt with the stupid high school drama that literally was just so stupid, like most of this book just dealt with how someone was getting with someone or how someone was cheating on their partner with someone else and it got to be so annoying.

i also found that our MC never really had any emotions. like, this might just be me, but i feel like she saw everything happening, but she never really felt anything besides thinking that her sister is an idiot. and that was really it. and she would talk about what was happening around her, but then never really went into detail about how she was feeling, since she was more concerned about petty high school drama.

like, i also feel like she didn’t really have a personality, which just got to be annoying. like, i could not tell you what she liked to do in her free time, since she would just talk about her friends or hell even about her family drama and how much she wants to have more friends then the few she has.

but, i do feel her not having a personality and being very two dimensional as a character is important and was on purpose. since, we can now see in this book that these characters have so many different flaws, and see how she thinks of different things, even if we didn’t get to see her personality or how she felt.

and i also found that they would bring some things up, but then like drop them. i feel like the biggest thing was that she would talk about a couple times about how she was a cheerleader, and then they like never brought it up again. which, was kind of annoying cause i think that was how she got most of her friends, which i expected to see more, or at least a little talk about practice or something.

but, if you want to read a book about the Rodney King riots, this book probably won’t be for you. since, this book doesn’t really follow that, it is mostly, like i said, petty high school drama. and if you do some research, you can probably find some books about the Rodney King riots, but i just want to make sure you know what you are getting yourself into cause this just wasn’t what i actually expected.

i also feel like Reed took way to much time to create these characters and these backstories for these characters, then actually telling the story. like, she could have completely spent way more time on building up the actual history and talking about what was happening and even what is going to happen. like, this book takes place in America, and we all know how shitty the American high school educations forgets big events like this. so, i wish they did go into more talk about that.

on a positive note, i did really like Lucia, Lana, Harrison, and LaShawn, and even his friends. i feel like they really added something with the story, since they were so easy to like, which most people in this book weren’t likeable at all. and i feel like these characters really made these characters grow and helped Ashley to be the better version of herself.

i also feel like the writing was kind of choppy. like, this might have just been me, but i feel like it was jumping around a lot, which got to be a bit annoying after a while. like, i feel like we were jumping around between a bunch of different plots and different events happening. like, between the whole lot of happening, and the writing wasn’t just that good for it.

with there being so many plots and subplots, so many things were unanswered. which, would be fine if it was a series, but it’s a single book. so, i feel like they should talk more about it and wrap up those ties in a neat and good way, which they didn’t do, obviously. and the whole cheating subplot was never brought up in the end, which sucked cause i was kind of invested into it so yeah.

i personally feel like the talk about race was super powerful. i’m not gonna say to much about it, since i feel like there is own voices reviewers who could probably say more, so i would check them out. but, still think it was super powerful.

i also feel like they could have, and probably should have, done multiple POVs for this book. i’m not the biggest multiple POV fans, but i feel like this book honestly needed it. like, i think LaShawn was honestly such a powerful character and he had so many different thoughts about the important things in this book, he probably should have gotten at least a couple chapters about him and to see his POV.

this book is also a YA book, which you could probably guess, since they are in high school. and this book is an historical fiction, which is a whole other topic for another day, since it does take place in 1992. and this book had so so so many pop culture references, which if i’m gonna be completely honest, most of these references did go over my head. so, i just wish they didn’t use as many, but also you know, use the really popular ones that people YA is geared towards can understand.

but, i do feel like a book with so much race, sexuality, family, family issues, prejudice and so much more, is so important, and even if this book isn’t for me, i still think this book is a must for people to read. and yeah this book might be a little hard to get into, but it is still think it needs to be read and especially talked about more.

anyway, that is all for today! i hope you enjoyed this post though. personally, i’m not sure if this book was actually that bad, or if my reading slump just honestly made it be a bad book, since i wasn’t enjoying anything what i was reading. but, i’m still kind of happy i read it.

fable review

hello everyone! today i am going to be talking about fable by Adrienne Young. i gave this book 2/5 stars. first off, thank you so much Wednesday Books and Netgalley for an arc of this book! and this book is going to be an honest review, not changed by the publisher and/or the author.

trigger warning- violence, death, child abuse, blood, death of a parent, murder, kidnapping, grief, physical abuse, child abuse.

overall, most of this book made literally zero sense. like, i feel like so much was happening. at so many parts of this book, there was just so much happening in this book. and it was just such a mess with the different plot points and what was actually happening, it really was just such a mess.

personally, i think Fable as a character was annoying. like, she would keep going on and on and on about how she wants to find her father, and how she wants to have this reuniting moment with him, when from the start, we know it’s not going to go well. like, it was easy for anyone to see that he left her for a reason, and on one random day he’s not gonna be like, oh yeah i’ll be your father again.

also, the first about 70% of this book was honestly such a mess. like, it was just so boring and nothing was happening. i guess it might be just setting the scene for the rest of the book and even the rest of this series. but, i feel like i get it, but i feel like it should have had more happening then the world building, or at least have some sort of balance.

and also the characters were just so boring. like, it was kind of cringey and just some of the most basic YA characters. personally, i feel like if this book came out and had these typed of characters when divergent and twilight came out, i would most likely liked this book so much more. and liked the characters and their very shitty backstory way more.

the writing of this book had it’s moments. like, i feel like at some parts i could completely think what is happening, and like i could see the scene playing out. but, then there was times in this book that parts just literally went over my head, which got to be annoying. it honestly had it’s moments, but it might just be me cause i don’t really like fantasy.

also, the characters of this book just didn’t develop at all. like, there as parts, were can and should grow, but instead it literally didn’t at all. which, just got to be a pain in the ass. and especially since this is a series, i feel like they should have grown at least a little bit. but, i do feel like they should have developed.

but, one thing that did develop was the romance. which, wasn’t really for the better. like, i feel like the boy Fable should have gotten with, didn’t get with, and kind of got with someone else. and it was just a mess, and i think they could have fixed this book up so much, but instead it was honestly kind of a mess. and they didn’t even need to romance in this book, since they could have completely done with out it, but whatever.

i also know a lot of YA pirates books have this massive crew, which is cool. but, in here is it a six person crew, which i expected to like it more, since i feel like we could get each person’s personality more. but, instead we don’t. like, each character felt like a copy and paste of each other, and i literally have zero clue of any of their names, which you could probably tell cause i didn’t write them down. but, i feel like we should have gotten more of a personality of these.

but, these characters are pirates, but also like not pirates. like, they have all of the traits of a pirate does have. which, i really liked, but they like aren’t pirates. so, they would do what they do stereotypical things, but they weren’t like actually pirates. which, is a mess, but i don’t really know what to call it. so, don’t know why i’m calling it that, but whatever.

and also, i know i called this a fantasy, but it like isn’t a fantasy. and i feel like this is really only one fantasy thing. so, i feel like the only real fantasy part of this book was the whole fantasy part was like one thing aka the city the lived in and visited. but, that was really it and kind of annoying not gonna lie. but, most of this i would like call to be an adventure, if that makes sense.

and honestly, there really isn’t a point of this book. like sure, i guess it might be the setting or that they are supposed to be badasses or something. but, this book honestly just felt like a high school essay, so it was just not it for me, if you couldn’t tell. and this book might have just been a little for the author to sallow, but it was just a mess.

but, that is it for today! i hope you enjoyed this post, cause i didn’t really enjoy this book, and i kind of feel like reviews were someone complains is lowkey better. but, i still think that i won’t pick up book two, unless i get super bored. needless to say, thank you for sending me this arc netgalley and wednesday books.

those who prey review

hello everyone! today i am going to be talking about those who prey by Jennifer Moffet. i gave this book 2/5 stars. this book honestly was such a mess, and i really only picked up this book since the cover is pretty and it’s compared to sadie, but i feel like it is nothing like sadie, like at all, which really just annoyed me in the end.

trigger warning- f slur dropped, homophobia, addiction, body shaming, bullying, death, drug abuse, eating disorder, grief, death of a parent.

one of my biggest turn off of this book, was towards the end of the book there was the f slur dropped by one of the characters. like, it really served no purpose of dropping it, and it was so unnecessary for them to say it. and also literally nobody is mentioning it and if they do they just say, well it’s fine cause its historical. and it really just annoyed the hell out of me.

i will say a positive for this book was that it did a very good job with showing how cults target people that quickly. like, i did find it to be really cool and i thought it was interest and better then the project was. but, i also thought it was done good, and it was cool to see how everyone got in over their head with joining this said cult.

but, on a less positive note, i personally think the main character was so stupid. like Emily would go on and on and on about how she wants to make friends, and hell it is even in the description. but, i get that you really want to make friends, but going into this cult, isn’t the right way, mate. but, i feel like she had on these blinders on, and i’m not sure because i was an outsider, but i have zero clue how emily never realized that she was going into a cult.

this book also had so much preaching. like, i’m not that big into religion, since it’s all just preaching, and i can’t stand that. which is the same way i don’t read that much non fiction. but, i feel like whenever they went to this church they would always just preach about your sins, heaven and hell, and even just talking sins. and when they would talk about it, it was really this couple that ‘funded’ this cult just preaching about their sins and how they are all living their life surronding by sins.

and i do wish we got to go a little bit deeper with what was considered a sin in their world. like, i personally just think it is whatever the Catholic Church has, but like on steroids. and they would kind of slut shame Emily cause she had sex with her long time boyfriend, and i kind of wished the stated what was considered a sin and what would make these characters go to hell and everything.

i do feel like the ending of the book was kind of lacking. like the start of the book was just growing out the cult and figuring out how everything was working. but, i do feel like this book had so much build up, and so much build up with different things in the end, and even the fall out of the cult. but, like this book had so much happening, and then the ending kind of fell off a cliff.

and i also think the ending was so bad. cause, threw out this whole book, there was these talks about how Emily got kidnapped or something along the lines of as this cult killed her. so, i was kind of expecting for her to die, which would be kind of cool. but, then the book was like lol she’s not dead, just kinda dumb with what she did when she was back home.

if you are a person that likes a lot of background on your background characters, and even some of the main characters, this book wasn’t for you. like, i personally feel like they would bring all these characters up and how they are in this said cult, but then they barely brought where they came from and their real background. and they would bring up all of these different people that went into this cult, but we didn’t even know something as stupid as their last name. and i really just wish we got more background on all the side characters, and even her friends, i wish we got more talk about their background.

this book also had so many long and very descriptive paragraphs. which, i did enjoy them going into detail about talking about where they were living and even what they were doing in this said household. but, i thought it was cool and i did enjoy that we got to see all of this, but it got to be a bit much. like, after awhile it was just a lot. i really just wish they stuck with the plot, and didn’t go to crazy with details.

i did enjoy the talk about her mother dying. i kind of liked the depth it gave her, and how till this day she was trying to overcome it and just still trying to understand what happened. i personally liked it, i just thought it was it was an interesting to watch her grow, especially when she moved back home, it was just really cool.

a lot of this book is also just to convenient. like, when everything was spiraling and when i kind of expected her to try to escape and maybe gonna be kidnapped, it was like oh yeah she’s fine, she has friends in Europe. and yeah, that’s nice that she has her godmother in Europe, but i just thought it was kind of a mess, and i do just wish that she didn’t have her godmother in Europe, since i think it might be more interesting.

and i think this book took place in about a month, or a very very short period of time. like, it was probably was more than just a month, but i think it was very short, and the timeline just didn’t seem reasonable to me. since, with her meeting her ‘friends’ and then going into this cult and then going to italy and then having that fall out. it just doesn’t seem reasonable for all of it to happen in a month, which it might not be, but i know it was a very short amount of time, and even if it was a two or three months, it still doesn’t seem reasonable.

this book also was pretty much an equivalate to those psa videos that got played in middle school by those cops that come in and talk about don’t do drugs and don’t go into gangs. and those videos in high school about teenage pregnancy, drinking drunk, bullying, or even not eating mcdonalds everyday. like this book was just one big psa.

overall, i do feel like this book is a very predictable book. like, it was very basic and very much read like a debut. but, if you like cult books, you might like this one, but just don’t think this book is all that amazing but, we all have different reading tastes.

anyway, that is all for today! i honestly wished i liked this book a lot more, since it had so much potential, but it just wasn’t that good. and i think between the cover and it being compared to sadie just rose my expectations, but i’m honestly still kind of excited that i did get to read this book.

you should see me in a crown review

hello everyone! today i am going to be talking about you should see me in a crown by Leah Johnson. i gave this book 3/5 stars. honestly, this book was pretty good, but i feel like i had just some random issues, but i still enjoyed this book. and, i also feel like this book was the a good book, but i mean i’m in a reading slump when i read this, so it probably made me enjoy this book a lot less.

trigger warning- harry potter mentioned, homophobia, outing, vomit, terminal illness, racism, parent death, panic attack, chronic illness, medical content, hate crime, bullying, vomit, grief, mental illness, medical trauma.

i do feel like this book did have a lot of hype coming with this book. like, i can see why people liked it, but for this whole review just take what i say with a grain of salt, since most of this is just the reading slump talking.

one of my biggest issues, is that i feel like this book had the readers being held at an arms length away. like, this might just be the slump talking, but i feel like a lot of high school romances, or even just books set in high school, you’re like one of their friends. but, instead i feel like it was kind of more like you are watching this happen from like the window or something but, i mean this might just be a me problem.

if you are into those 90s or even early 2000s movie, it would be a perfect book for you. especially if you want a more diverse 90s high school movie, this book would completely be for you. like, i really honestly thought it was really cool, since it just reminded me of those movies. but, this does deal with some of the more harder topics you wouldn’t really see in one of those movies though.

with that being said, i do wish we get to see this on the small screen. i feel like this could have the same treatment as to all the boys i’ve loved before, since the both are kind of the same, with the whole 90s movie feel and all, so i think it would be so cool to see this get adapted by Netflix.

but, i do really liked that Liz Lighty was not one of those perfect YA main characters. which, was super cool honestly. i mean, it was really cool to see her being kind of dorky and not have the perfect high school moments. and also that it was cool to see that she didn’t necessarily fit in, but she wanted to. and even trying to fit in but then growing and learning that she doesn’t really need to fit in. and she is honestly a character i can really like and i really think a lot of people will like her for that and can resonate with her.

then there is Mack. who, i personally think that she tried to hard to be this amazing person. but, i mean, how she figured and tried to help these arguments to stop kind of annoyed me. and i feel like he just didn’t have that well of communication. but, i also kind of feel like she was trying to hard to have Liz actually like her.

but, i also feel like this book is so centered around this romance and then prom, some of the friendships kind of went to the waste side. so, i mean it was cool, but it wasn’t the best thing in the world. but, i mean i feel like these friendships could be amazing and really help the story grow. but, i think that there was this friendship, Jordan and Liz, it could have been so amazing. like, if Johnson developed it, it would have been so amazing. and i thought it was super cool to see that grow and just have this friendship grow.

with that being said, i do really liked that we got to see the m/f friendship and also the f/f relationship. like, it was so cool, cause i kind of personally feel that a lot of queer book don’t have to many friendships, and i really liked that we got to see this really amazing friendship, and also get this amazing queer relationship.

i kind of also wanted to see more of Liz’s mother and how she died or whatever. like, i feel like they talked about the mom a lot, and how she now lives with her grandparents. so, i really wish they went more into depth about it all. and that we could get told about how she died and how it really effected Liz’s mental state, cause i know that can’t be easy for her. and since her brother has the same illness, i kind of wished that we got to see more about how Liz feels and how it affects her mental health.

and also that Robbie and Liz’s relationship was so cute, since Robbie was just so freaking cute and that he always wanted to do whatever that she wants, he’ll support her. like, he completely supported Liz and Mack’s relationship, and also just wish going to college and running for prom queen, and he always had her back, which i loved so much. and even the way she is so protective over him, it was just so cute and i loved the sibling friendship, which i don’t feel like we get to much in YA books, so seeing this cute sibling friendship, it was so cool.

but, i feel like the start of this book really was kind of slow. so, the start was good, but it wasn’t the most gripping part of the book. and i know that it was really kind of good, since we got to know Liz on the personal level, and also know how this city works. which, i kind of liked to see this, but i just wished it was more exciting.

i also kind of wished we got to see more of the plot about her going to college. like, i know that it was hard to always talk about college, but i wish we got to see more of it. cause, i think when the romance got rolling, the college and future talk kind of fell off the cliff, which to a degree i understand and i even kind of expected it to happen.

i’m gonna jump back to the friends, but i feel like there was so many character. like there was about 7 other girls running for prom queen and like 8 men running for prom queen, and then like 10 girls that were for Liz’s friends. and like most of the people in this friend group just had so much drama and they all did really nothing to the plot, which was just super annoying. and i honestly feel like they could have just cut out so much of the drama if thy cut out a couple of the friends.

i also kind of liked that this book was set in a small town, and that it was set in this small town prom obsessed town. like, i feel like it being in this small, boring small town was honestly pretty cool. and it made me really like it. and if this was a really big town, it wouldn’t really work that well, in my mind. and bring in how much this town loved prom, was honestly so cool.

this book also had so many pop culture references. like, i’m all for bring up your favorite show or bring up you favorite artist here and there is always cool, and i really like getting to see what these people like is cool. but, i feel like there was just so many references with songs, tv shows, movies, people, products, stores, it got to be a lot and it just got to be so annoying. and like i said, i really like some things, but it was getting on my nerves after awhile.

and i don’t know if it is just me, but i feel like there needs to be a balance in any book really, with the pop culture references and how many times you can bring something like that up. and i feel like this book went above and beyond with bringing in these references.

the dialogue of this book was kind of a mess. like, there are just some super cringey dialogue between the characters and between some of the characters and the friends, it kind of made me want to poke out my eyes. like, it just got to be kind of a mess, and i feel like when you are writing books for teenagers with teenage characters, you need to have good dialogue that isn’t cringey af.

anyway, that is all for today! i honestly liked this book, but i feel like between the reading slump and just this book being so hyped up by everyone, i would have probably liked this book so much. but, i also have hopes that i will like Johnson’s other book that is coming out later this year.

wilder girls review

hello everyone! today i am going to be talking about wilder girls by Rory Power. i gave this book 4/5 stars. i honestly really liked this book, and it was super cool and kind of weird, but in a really good way. which, i honestly really liked in the end of it.

trigger warning- pandemic, body horror, death, gore, blood, suicide, violence, medical content, confinement, child death, medical trauma, animal death, self harm, death of a parent, vomit, murder, grief, chronic illness, terminal illness, suicide attempt, forced institutionalization, torture, eating disorder, gun violence.

overall, this book was kind of confusing. like, it was confusing as all hell for a good chuck of this book, but then again it was kind of cool even though i was so confused for a lot of this book. i mean, i kind of understood some parts of these books were kind of easy to understand, but then other parts where just a mess. and i mean, i feel like some books are better if you don’t understand with what is happening, so it was honestly pretty enjoyable.

but, this book is pretty much all about this pandemic. the pandemic of this book isn’t that much like what we are going threw, but it is very much the worst of them all. and i really just wanted to put it out there, since i know this book can be kind of triggering to some people because of what we lived threw and still are living threw.

and i feel like most horror books, like i don’t know about you, but a lot of the main stream horror books are written by men, with male characters as the main character, or even that it is a man writing a woman, and they are very straight. which, i really liked that this book was so feminist, and it was a very feminist horror story, or even if you would call it feminist, cause it might just be a a sci fi mystery, but still.

i also really liked that these characters had emotions. like, a lot of horror books it was very much like their whole goal was just to stay alive and figure out who did it and so they don’t get killed. where, in here the characters have real relationships and their passionate and even very independent. and i really liked that, and i thought it was so cool.

this book also has a very open ending. which, i don’t read to many books with the very opening endings. so, i really liked that we kind of got to figure out what we think happens and i honestly really liked that. cause i honestly feel like that it really worked with kind of you figuring out if you think someone is gonna die or they are gonna make it out alive.

i also kind of wished we got told more about this school. like, that was probably one of my issues, is that we never got to see why these girls went to these school. like most of the reasons they have this go away school in books deals with boarding school or like they are troubled or like a genius. so, i kind of wished that we got to see more of these moments.

i also really liked that we could see all of these different characters. like, i feel like most of the main characters got to see more of these different views and how they all are so different. like, how they all have different issues with the outbreak and i thought they were honestly kind of cool.

this book is also kind of slow paced. like, with the whole book kind of growing things, and i mean Power really laid everything out, with the whole way everything was happening. which, to a degree i kind of liked, cause we did get to see them do basic survival things, and even some other things that just set the scene. which, was cool, but i wished their was more in the start of the book and more horror.

but, the disease is the main part of this book with the whole pandemic in this said book. like, i don’t know if they said this, or that if i just forget it, but i wished we got told how it really started. i honestly really wanted to know where did it come from, and then how and why each person had these different reactions. and even why and how each animal got it, and how they even got sick, which i think it was interesting.

i’ve heard rumors about this book getting a sequel sometime soon. which is honestly so cool and i really wish that we got to see more of these answers come out, and maybe even that we will get to see more of these questions answered in the end of this book.

the imagery was honestly so freaking amazing. like, i could completely see all of these scenes happening and what each character looks like. which, i honestly really liked so much. and i believe this book is a debut, which was honestly so amazing. like, with all of the characters and the development and how each and every scene in this book i could see happening and i could kind of watch it happened as i listened to this book.

anyway, that i all for today! i honestly really liked this book, which was kind of surprising cause i didn’t like Power’s other book. but, i really liked this and i’m honestly really excited to see what this author comes out with next, which i think is coming the summer of this year.

you have a match review

hello everyone! today i am going to be talking about you have a match by Emma Lord. i gave this book 2/5 stars. honestly, this book was nothing like i really expected, and not in the a good way. but, i do feel like there could be so much potential, but then it really hit the whole YA romance vibe, which really sucked.

trigger warning- harry potter mentioned, infertility, bullying, death, grief.

but, i do feel like this writing in this book are pretty cringey. like, i feel like it was trying to be very gen-z, when it really didn’t work out that well. like, it was trying to be this cute and i’m so stupid, vibe to it. when, i feel like it was just kinda of weird. the writing broadline felt like an english teacher trying to be all cool when they say an out of date slang term. and i think the author is in her 20s, so i don’t know why it was so weird.

and then there was this ‘slang’ that was used in this book. like, they were like cheesy and kind of middle grade / juvenile. like there was something like Abby the Lying Liar, i believe, from what people are saying that on goodreads, and like the BEI, the big embarrassing incident. and then i think there was something like these dialogue, which made me want to poke my eyes out. cause, i feel like nobody in real life would say this, like me and my friend would never actually say this shit ever.

there was also so many characters, and i kind of expected them all to have so many different personalities. but, in reality, they literally were all the same. like, everyone didn’t like their camp schedule, and how they didn’t want to be here, or how they were in love with Savvy. and i thought it was kind of weird and it lowkey made me hate this book a lot more. cause i feel like everyone was a copy and paste of each other.

and overall, i feel like this book had potential, and was kinda good at parts. like i overall really liked seeing the mystery. like, it was this really kind of weird mystery, like nothing like you would see in a mystery book. but, i do feel like it was kind of cool to see Abby and Savvy undercover the whole how they are related, and then how and why they think they got split up and everything. like, i honestly thought it was kind of cool. but, yet it was nothing to write home about.

like, and i think it was so cool to see them figure out their relationship, and i think that it was cool to see it all work out. and how they tried to figure out this new relationship and how they both can grow in this relationship and figure all their shit out. and i mean i think that it was cool to see what them being sisters are, and how they can grow in everything, and learn to be sisters finally.

but, i really hated the plot about Savvy being this influencer. like, it really just rubbed me the wrong way, with how she would promote anything that was like juice cleanses, and those drinks and foods that make you skinny if you drink or eat them enough. and it was so annoying, since she would just push her harmful health crap on her followers. and also that she was this kind of attractive, white influencer thing. and it was just a mess and i literally hated this book so much.

i do wish though, they went into more in depth about teenagers and social media and influencers go all together. like, they did talk about social media and how it might mess with their mind. i mean, they did talk about it, since a couple characters did run a couple of fan pages, like i think a grey’s one and maybe one for some video game, which i liked, but i wish they went more into influencer drama.

then the romance. which, was so stupid. like, i really thought it was kind of cool to see their relationship. but, then again, they already were deathly in love with each other. and then they kind of already had this relationship, even if they weren’t like actually together, like boyfriend and girlfriend being thrown around. and also their communication got better, which i thought was pretty cool and enjoyable.

there is also so many lies in this book. like, Abby was lying to her parents, friends, her sister, and even herself in most parts of this book. like, i know she was trying to meet her sister, i overall get you want to met her sister, but there was just so many lies. and when i was reading this book, i mean i tried to figure out what was happening and i mean she’s like 17, so i know she will lie here and there. but, when these characters are being forced to lie, it just got to be annoying.

and then i feel like they did try to cram so many parent trap moments into it. like, i mean i get that you want to do some plot about the parent trap, but i feel like they were just trying to push them so much. like, this whole book was Savvy and Abby putting their two brains together and try to figure everything out, but instead they really could have just asked their parents instead of freaking out.

and when they ask someone it is like the last 10% or something like that. which, i think it so annoying, since i feel like we could have had this whole oh yeah you guys are sisters lol and then Abby’s parents and Savvy can grow in their relationship and i mean, i think it would be so cool. like, i feel like we could have had this whole part about them growing in their relationship and becoming friends again.

but, i also think that their friends and even some of the random side characters could have had this potential, and even when they came up, they were so amazing and like really dorky and funny. like, i mean i wish they got to see more of them and to see them to become more of a main character.

i also feel like there is barely any camp talk. like, they are at this camp, but they are cooking like lasagna balls, and half of the time the are barely even doing anything like camp related. and i mean, i this book could have taken place in LA, a school, or hell even disney world because they never talked about it all. and it just got to be kind of much.

anyway, that is all for today! i hope you enjoyed this post, and like i will probably read tweet cute, since that book honestly sounds to be kind of cute, and hopefully it won’t be that cheesy or anything like that. but, i mean i still hope it is a good book.
