hello everyone! happy blogmas day 19! today i am going to be talking about the obsession by jesse Q. sutanto. i gave this book 3/5 stars. i honestly feel like this book was just mediocre, like i didn’t hate it, but i also didn’t love it, and i just feel like it was kind of middle of the road, plot wise.
trigger warnings- stalking, domestic abuse, drug use, murder, death, drug abuse, emotional abuse, physical abuse, blood, child abuse, toxic relationship, violence, injury / injury detail, addiction, animal death, mental illness, misogyny, suicidal thoughts, suicide, grief, suicide attempt.
honestly, from the description, i think that this sounds like a decent book with a decent plot, and that it sounds like it works. and like how the blackmail and stalking, sounds pretty easy and it makes sense. but, i feel like nothing else doesn’t make sense. like, for one, i feel like the stalking also doesn’t work, since i have no clue how none of the neighbors every found out what happened, and in the end, it just doesn’t make sense.
but, another thing that doesn’t make sense is the ending. like, so much of this book happened so quick and i feel like this whole book, we really got to see the growth of the characters and got to see how the relationship and blackmail worked, which was cool. but, i also think that the ending of this book, as it did kind of fit with the theme of the book, didn’t work. like, the ending of this book was a ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ ending, which i can appreciate, but in this book, it just didn’t make sense. and like i think they could have always done an epilogue that was like a couple day/weeks/months later, and have deliah and logan’s story finally close up.
but, i feel like where the first part was good and exciting and were i honestly really liked it. i feel like the second part of the book was lacking. like, i think the biggest part of the book for me, was that it didn’t really have that shock value like the first part had, which i think was really disappointing, since i think that they could have done it really well, but instead they just didn’t do it.
for logan as a character, i honestly really liked him. like, i think the author wrote him in a really good way, were you can see and understand how he was unstable and manic, i think it was done really well and i honestly really liked it. and i honestly think it was just kind of cool to see him from the start of the book to the ending of the book, were we are starting to know more about him as a character and know what we know, and just really cool to see that progression.
one thing that i did really like was how they kind of played with the ‘nice guy’ trope, if you could even call it a trope. like, i feel like in mystery / thriller books, they always have the same type of person that is the person that committed the crime and that they always had the same type of killer / stalker / bad guy, so i honestly really liked they had this all american boy and made it be kind of cool to have that. plus, i think that so many of men like logan out there, that are not good guys even if they look like it, so i honestly liked that they kind of had this part of it.
but, for delilah, i honestly also liked her, but a little less than i liked logan. like, with her, i feel like there were so many layers to her as a character, which i honestly really liked, and i liked seeing it all kind of unfold and see how the different things impacted her life. and also i think that overall, she was just a very interesting character. but, i think the one thing i didn’t really like about her though, was that after she killed her step dad, she was kind of played off as the victim. like, i get that he abused her and her mom, but i feel like they shouldn’t have had her play the victim so hard.
but, i did really like that this book both did have two different unlikeable characters. like, i think that there is a lot of books only have one big unlikeable character, so i honestly really liked that we got two villains. and i think it was just kind of cool to see this and just to see the two different villains, and i think it was just really fun. and i mean, i think having two unlikeable character were just so cool, cause even if we didn’t know they were villains at the time, i still think it was fun.
like, i even think it was just kind of cool to see how they had these two unlikeable characters, and like i think it was kind of cool to see how they cheer for each other. like, i think it was kind of interesting to see how you know what is happening, but at the same time you don’t know who to root for and who is the good or the bad guy. and like, i feel like it was just fun to be able to able to not know what is wrong and if you should root for deliah or for logan and i think that it was honestly just kind of cool, in a really weird way.
with that though, i honestly feel like that was a very quick and easy read. like, i think that it was a quick read and they didn’t talk about to much stuff that wasn’t important to the story, which i honestly really liked. but, at the same time, i feel like there was just little things throughout this story that were missing, which annoyed the hell out of me. but, i think that it was still easy since you’re not focusing to much on the times that don’t matter to much, more so just the story.
anyway, that is all for today! i honestly liked this story a lot, and i feel like it was a decent one. but, i feel like that it was kind of a mess at certain points, which got on my nerves after awhile. but, i mean, it was quick and easy, so you can’t complain that much.
