hello everyone! happy blogmas day 22! today i am going to be talking about historically inaccurate by Shay Bravo. i gave this book 1/5 stars. this book was pretty terrible, like i feel like there was just a ton of drama in this book. but, thank you so much Netgalley for this book.
one thing that kind of confused me a little bit, was how it just jumped straight up to the plot. like it literally was straight to the plot, which got to be kind of annoying since i had no clue what was happening. and because when everything started we just know Sol is stealing a spoon, but we eventually got more, but it was still kind of a mess.
i also don’t really know how Sol just knew the whole floor plan of the house she was breaking into. i mean, i feel like it could be like someone else the club knew it, but it still kind of confused me. and like they never really said anything about it, just that she was going into here.
but, also Bravo described every single thing that was happening in this book. like every single little thing was described in so much detail, and it just got to be kind of annoying. like, there was so much talk about what her bike was, her bedspread, her cat, and hell even her computer breaking was in so much detail it got to be annoying.
with that being said, we got so much detail about the non important things, but then something like her mom being deported, which was talked about a ton, it was like three sentences. which, is so annoying, since it is a central plot thing, not just something stupid like her laptop.
and she also had so many thoughts. like so freaking many, and it got to be annoying after awhile. and of course, she never had anything good to say, only the boring and stupid crap. (i.e. all the talk about her laptop and how she wants to eat a muffin.)
one thing that rubbed me the wrong way, and got to be so gross the first time this happened. which, was our love interest kept dead-naming and misgendering. and, there of course can be two sides of this argument, one that the author did it or two that it was the characters. which, i’ve seen both of them. and i personally think it is so annoying that people are like brushing this off since the characters did this, not actually the author, even though the author wrote it. this also happened more then once, like 7 times, and it was so gross.
look, i like a good book with some lgbtqia+ characters and also a diverse cast of characters, but in here they are so flat and just annoying. and like most of the non white characters in books they grow and just talk about how they aren’t white and how they are comfortable. which, we didn’t get or anything close to it. and the same thing with our transgender character, it was just misgendering over and over and over again, which doesn’t sit right with me honestly.
but the pace was also crap. like we got pages and pages of the smallest details, which honestly just let me skim pages and pages and pages of this book, since this book was honestly so boring. and there also was so much that got repeated over and over and over again, which was just so annoying, since we got this the first time, we don’t need it 50 times.
the whole plot of these books were all about this history club. like you’d expect a history club to talk about history, it was just the character doing stupid crap that was just so boring. and like all they did was jump of buildings and stealing spoons. and then the Black love interest, Ethan, who is talking about not wanting to do anything risky, since he is Black and he doesn’t want the police to find out since he doesn’t want to be killed. but, then all of the characters were like oh well we don’t care.
but, then in the end of the novel the club gets reported to the school board and/or the police. and all of the characters were like straight up crying cause they were SO surprised. like, you are doing illegal crap, so of course the police are gonna talk this seriously. and look into you and going to take down your ‘club.’ and this honestly cannot be that much of a surprise to anyone.
i also didn’t really care for the romance. it honestly kind of annoying, since it had nothing to do with the plot. and i mean, this book was about finding yourself and the stupid club, do the romance did nothing for me, and should have just been cut out.
anyway, that’s all for today! happy blogmas day 22! thank you so much netgalley for this arc, even if i didn’t really like it. and of course, all my opinion are my own.
